Enabling Innovation Through Tiny Efficiencies

Innovation doesn’t have to come in huge packages. To reflect back on the difference in Incremental versus Radical Innovation from Dani’s post a few months ago, innovation doesn’t necessarily have to cost money, take years to develop, slice my bread or involve the patent office. The only absolute requirement for any innovation is the birth of an idea, plus the passion and time to execute it. But what if you’re really, really busy with your day job and your best ideas visit you two milliseconds before you fall asleep and then they’re gone forever?

Simple: Make time for it. And start small.

That’s right. Find a way to make just a tiny difference in the way you work today and then make time for “idea birthing.” As a tech-savvy individual, my personal and professional life is dominated with, “Ryan? How do I… something something… on the computer/Internet/social media?” I can’t begin to imagine the man hours I’ve saved by something as small as becoming proficient with keyboard shortcuts or using the right applications for the right jobs. My skills as a marketer and ability to manage my time are forever influenced by these tiny efficiencies and I hope one day, will contribute to an innovation that will help change the world.

So, what tiny efficiencies did you pick up today?
